OUR STORY

The Maltese Diabetes Association was founded in 1988 by Mr. Tancred Zammit after his teenage daughter was diagnosed with diabetes. The Association was established to provide support, education, and a sense of community for people living with the condition.

Today, the Association is a well-established voluntary non-profit organisation led by parents, people living with diabetes, and healthcare professionals. It organises talks on diabetes care and complications, offering practical guidance and shared experiences for members and the wider public.

The Association also runs educational camps for children and youth, providing hands-on learning in self-care, glucose management, and peer support. The youth camp is organised alongside DAISY (Diabetes Association in Support of Youth), which since 2009 has been engaging young people to foster confidence and independence.

In addition, the Association conducts free blood glucose screenings, publishes quarterly newsletters, and uses media platforms to raise awareness about diabetes and healthy management. Having navigated challenges in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Association remains committed to supporting and empowering the diabetes community.

Over three decades of experience have made the Maltese Diabetes Association Malta’s leading organisation for people with diabetes, helping individuals of all ages navigate their condition with knowledge, confidence, and resilience.
