The Maltese Diabetes
Association
|
Our Association
is a voluntary non-governmental organisation aimed
at educating its members and the general public
on diabetes and how to prevent complications arising
from it.
Our mission is to
improve the lives of people with diabetes and
to work towards a future with fewer complications and more awareness on this condition. There
are over 30,000 persons in Malta who have been
diagnosed with diabetes. This number is set to
double by 2010.
Statistics also
show that there are hundreds if not thousands
who probably have the condition but don't know
it.

The Association was set
up in 1981 and at present has a membership of just over
1000 members. During the past two decades a lot of work
has been done thanks to the excellent work carried out
by the following persons who occupied leading roles
within the Association: Mr. Tancred Zammit, Dr. Antoine
G. Schranz and Professor Joseph Azzopardi.
The Association
is currently led by a team of dedicated persons who
are either diabetics or parents of diabetic children.
The Executive Council is led by Ms Anna Zammit Mc Keon,
as President. Ms Zammit Mc Keon is also the first woman
to occupy the highest post within the Association.
The Association has its
headquarters within the British Legion premises at 111,
Melita Street, Valletta. Previously the Association
operated from different offices in South Street, Valletta.
